Governance

SMICS has established a governance structure to support its catchment profile. It brings together key people from the member health services (Alfred Health, Cabrini Health, Peninsula Health and Southern Health) and other integral organisations supporting cancer care. The ten SMICS tumour groups remain the key platform for providing leadership in ongoing cancer service development.

ICS governance principles

  • Leadership to promote a shared vision for service improvement, including the development of a positive culture for integration across services in the context of a population focused service delivery model, separate legal health service entities, existing research and academic affiliations, and a mixed public/private system.
  • Authority to implement change, including the development of services in line with agreed standards and appropriate degrees of specialisation according to a role designation framework.
  • Accountability for service delivery according to best practice and across the continuum of care. Clear accountability for patient safety and quality of services.
  • Ownership of the change process and mechanisms to determine priorities for service integration and service improvement.
  • Sustainability of the new cancer service system.
